WHY SAND TRAINING?

BENEFITS OF SAND TRAINING

A recent study compared the effect of sand and grass training surfaces during sport-specific conditioning sessions in team sport athletes. The characteristics of a sand training surface and a grass training surface are quite different. For the athlete there are distinct physiological as well as biomechanical differences when performing on one or the other. This s effects of each surface on soccer players.  Both physiological and perceptual variables such as blood lactate, heart rate, and ratings of perceived exertion were measured during each session. Additionally, throughout the 24 hour post-exercise period, measures such as muscle damage, inflammation, and hemolysis (the breakdown of red blood cells) were measured. GPS units were used to monitor sport-specific conditioning sessions, and distance and speed were calculated from the data collected on the units. Blood samples were taken pre-, post-, and 24 hours after exercise.2 The results of the research showed a significantly higher heart rate and rating of perceived exertion in the sand training sessions. There were no differences in 24-hour post-exercise performance, no indications of muscle damage, and rates of inflammation and hemolysis were similar between each surface. These results suggest that performing a sport-specific conditioning session on sand as opposed to grass can result in a greater physiological response, without inflicting any additional damage to next day performance.3 Based on this research, athletes can use sand surfaces to improve performance without worrying about recovery or performance issues. Sand training requires less stability and energy returned during exercise, which results in a greater workload for the muscles to achieve the same output. The fact that it won’t affect recovery is promising, since it can be an effective training method.4

SAND TRAINING TO PREVENT INJURIES

A key implication for this study is the potential training benefits of beach soccer. The results clearly show that it is physically demanding and should elicit a training effect. Fitness should be improved. The advantage of sand training is that it is also low impact and may help avoid overuse injuries. Professional clubs and other sports already take advantage of this concept. Running, playing and performing drills in the sand is often used as a way to improve fitness.

Earlier studies also show that training in sand can have other benefits including increased proprioception, strength and agility. While these changes have obvious effects on performance, they may also lower the risk of knee and ankle injury. By improving the strength and proprioception of the muscles surrounding these joints, stability is improved and injuries may be minimized. It should be pointed, however, out that there are a few studies focused in sand training and performance. As of today, no research has looked into sand training as a way to lower injury risk. Nevertheless, the potential is there, especially given the neuromuscular improvements that occur following training in sand.

The bottom line… Beach soccer is a physically demanding activity. It may also elicit training effects that improve performance and may reduce injury risk. Given this, it may be an excellent training tool to supplement regular soccer practice.

THE AERIAL GAME

The great thing about playing on the beach  is the bare feet.  After your body adapts to the stinging sensation of kicking a sand-covered ball, you can start to play freely and work on your touch.  Since playing soccer without shoes forces your feet to really master the art of touch, you will greatly see improvements in ball control should you really take to beach soccer.Another great thing about beach soccer is that the playing surface forces you to work at your aerial game.  Passes often go astray as the uneven sand is a tricky nuisance, so the most successful play comes from chipped passes and volleyed shots.  For any young soccer player, these are incredibly important skills to work on, as an aerial advantage is crucial in grass soccer as well.  Players simply cannot defend a well-placed overhead through ball or powerful cross.  Therefore, take advantage of beach soccer to harness such skills.Another great thing about beach soccer is that forces you to maintain a high level of drive and intensity if you want to win the game.  The bumpy sand surface results in a high number of misplaced passes and loose 50-50 balls.  Whoever wants the ball more is probably going to get it more and will likely win the game.  This desire is often a very important factor in grass soccer but is magnified in beach soccer due to the uneven surface.Running around on the sand will also help to improve your balance.  Although you will often feel shaky, this will improve your ability to maintain a proper stance and improve the strength of your leg muscles.

MESSI SAND RECOVERY

Messi trusts beach training for fastest recovery

Football stars, as well as many other sportsmen and sportswomen take the best advantage of the benefits of the beach for their physical preparation. As experts point, the beach sand is an ideal surface to reinforce articulations and recover from joint injuries thanks to its instability and irregularity. The last one to jump onto it again has been Lionel Messi. The FC Barcelona superstar, who got his ankle injured in the last weekend’s game against Atlético de Madrid, will miss no time to get out of the sickbay as soon as possible. And the medical services of his club, with Dr. Pruna ahead, pointed the most effective way: training on the beach. The Argentinean footballer will soon begin his work on the sand, combining continuous running and jumping exercises with passing and shot moves, and ball handling circuits. This will help him recover the strength in his ankle, as well as will allow him to keep his muscle tone.It is worth remembering that this is not the first time that the world’s best footballer goes training to the beach for a fast and satisfactory recovery. It was in last December, in Abu Dhabi, that Messi achieved miracle betterment thanks to his exercising on the sand. Just seven days after suffering a level 2 ankle strain in Kiev, Barcelona’s number 10 played a key role in his team victory over Atlante in the FIFA Clubs World Cup semifinal.

GET FIT AND STRONG

Playing on sand offers the player conditioning at a different level than grass. The sand inhibits movements and jumping that creates a field where one will have to work twice as hard. Since the beach game is a lot more deliberate, the sun and heat will fatigue your body quicker. The cross training will reinvigorate a soccer player in preparation for the upcoming soccer season. The sand offers up more resistance than the hard ground notably to the muscles in your feet, calves, and hip flexors. The sand will load up a soccer player’s quads, hamstrings, and glutes. By training on the sand, one will see an improvement in their soccer speed.By participating in sand soccer, one will increase their endurance levels since jogging in sand requires more quad and hamstring work because your legs sink down into the sand which will require one to push against the ground in order to propel the body forward. Hip flexor muscles will become stronger when sprinting on the sand since one is not sinking as much as one would if jogging. Soccer players will improve upon their balance playing on sand and will improve upon their thought process, since in the sand, one cannot maneuver around with the ball as one can on the grass.

HOW SAND HELPS

What it is and how it helps: Sand training is a low-impact form of resistance training.“Since the surface is constantly shifting, you’re always a little off balance,” Fertig says. “It’s a totally different use of the body.”Training on sand activates and strengthens underworked areas, such as the ankles and foot muscles, which are used to grip the uneven surface.Since the body must constantly adjust, training on sand is advantageous for improving balance and stability. The surface is also beneficial for training to improve quickness and build explosive strength because muscles require a greater workload to accelerate, run, jump and change direction.
